About

The UK Holocaust Map is an initiative of The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) and the Department for Levelling up, Housing and Communities.

About the project:

Sites all across the UK help to tell the story of the Holocaust and British responses to Nazism. This platform helps you to learn about your local connections to the worst crime ever committed.

About the sponsors:

The Association of Jewish Refugees is the national charity supporting Holocaust refugees and survivors living in Great Britain. Primarily providing social, welfare and care services, the AJR also has a nationwide network of regional groups offering members a unique opportunity to socialise in their local area. Members receive support from volunteers and can obtain advice and assistance on welfare rights as well as on Holocaust reparations.

In addition to its social welfare programmes, the AJR is also the UK’s largest dedicated funder of programmes and projects which promote teaching and learning about the Holocaust in the United Kingdom. We believe that our role as a grant maker comes with great responsibility, so we aim to support programmes which are underpinned by current scholarship relating to the history of the Holocaust and the pedagogical approaches to teaching it. In addition to supporting educational programmes, the AJR also has a long history of funding Holocaust remembrance projects. We believe that Britain’s role in the Holocaust – including the events that led to it and its aftermath – is a fundamental part of our nation’s history, and we support work taking place in communities across the country to preserve this memory.

The Department for Levelling up, Housing and Communities
The Department for Levelling up, Housing and Communities is responsible for the delivery of the new Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre next to the Houses of Parliament in Westminster and is advised by The UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation. The Holocaust Memorial Foundation  also advises HM government on taking forward the recommendations of the Prime Minister’s Holocaust Commission.

The Foundation seeks to  preserve the memory of the Holocaust whilst also considering its contemporary relevance. The Holocaust – the murder of Europe’s Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators – remains unsurpassed as a historical event in its aims and extent, yet the questions it raises have many echoes in the modern world, including (but not restricted to) subsequent genocides and the persistence of antisemitism.

The Foundation also work with other institutions across the UK supporting Holocaust commemoration and education. We aim to complement the forthcoming Holocaust memorial and learning centre with online material, drawing on the same research and sources, making links to other relevant sites, and promoting a deeper understanding of the Holocaust among as wide an audience as possible.
